尊敬的胡锦涛主席和夫人，尊敬的蓝峰主席，尊敬的各位来宾，女士们、先生们，
Your Excellency President Hu and Madam Liu Yongqing,
Your Excellency Mr. Chairman,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

此刻我们相聚在美丽的黄浦江畔，共 同开启一场全球盛会的帷幕。明天，有着159年历史
的世博会将首次在发展中国家、在中国举行。感谢 国际展览局的成员国，是你们的选择让
中国人民对世博会的向往从遥远的憧憬成为今天的现实，感谢24 0个国家和国际组织以及
中外企业的参展方，是你们的无限激情、智慧、创意、精湛技艺，让一座座美轮 美奂的展
馆展现了生命的力量，传递着和平、友爱、希望。感谢全国人民，尤其是上海市人民，以
及上海世博会的建设者、工作者、志愿者，是你们的参与和奉献，理解和支持，让我们得
以分享上海世 博会的精彩。一个半世纪以来，人类前进的脚步在世博会上留下了不可磨灭
的印记。

At this moment, we are gathering here to open a grand global Expo beside the beautiful Huangpu
River. Tomorrow will mark the inception of the World Expo, with a history of 159 years, in
China, a developing country. Thank you memberships of the International Exposition’s Bureau,
for your choice having enabled the Chinese people to turn their long aspirations of the World
Expo into reality today. Thank you 240 countries, international organizations and participants of
enterprises from both home and abroad, for your everlasting enthusiasm, intelligence and
exquisite craftsmanship, having taken in front of us a series of magnificent and robust pavilions,
which epitomize peace, friendship, love and hope. My thanks should also go to all the Chinese
people, people in Shanghai municipality, and builders, staff, volunteers of the Expo in particular,
for your participation, dedication, comprehension and strong support, due to which, we can share
a splendid Shanghai Expo. Over the past 150 years, human progress has marked indelible prints
of the history of world expos.


城市让生活更美好，第一次以城市为主题的上海世博 会是各国人民创新、合作、交流的平
台，它将打开未来城市的大门，引领新的生活方式，促进人与城市、 自然相和谐，推动建
设平安、文明、幸福的城市，促进人的全面发展。


Initiating the theme as “better city, better life”, around city, the Shanghai Expo will offer a
platform for innovation, cooperation and exchanges among different countries. It will also open
the door of the future of cities, lead new lifestyles, promote harmony between humankind, cities
and the nature, enhance the development of a safe, civilized and well-off city, thus boosting an
overall development.

上海世博园即将开放，我们将以真诚的笑容让所有观众在中国体验一届成功、精彩、难忘
的世博会。女士们、先生们，以人为本，全面协调可持续发展的理念已成为中国政府和人
民的坚定选择 ，一个更加开放、包容的中国将与世界各国一道，共同推动人类文明进步。
最后，预祝中国2010年上 海世博会圆满成功。谢谢！

The Shanghai Expo site is about to open. We will embrace all the visitors with a successful,
splendid and unforgettable World Expo in China. Ladies and gentlemen, the Chinese government
and people will persistently pursue the conception of putting people first and seeking a
comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development. May I conclude my remarks by
wishing the World Expo 2010, Shanghai, China a complete success. Thank you.

This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day focuses on “Gender and tobacco, with an
emphasis on marketing to women”.

今年世界无烟日活动的主题是“两性与烟草——关注针对女性的促销行为”。

Although fewer than 1 out of 10 women are smokers, that still adds up to an estimated 200
million women around the world. Moreover, that number could grow, since the tobacco
industry is spending heavily on advertisements that target women and associate tobacco use with
beauty and liberation.

虽然只有不到十分之一的女性吸 烟，但这仍使全世界女烟民人数近达两亿。而且，由于烟
草企业花巨资制作针对女性的广告，将烟草与美 丽和妇女解放挂钩，这一数字还有可能增

According to a recent study by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of girls and
boys who smoked was about equal in half the 151 countries surveyed. This finding is even
more worrisome since young people who smoke are likely to continue in adulthood.

世界卫生组织近期对151个国家的调查 显示，有一半国家，男孩和女孩的吸烟人数不相上
下。由于青少年在成年后很可能继续吸烟，这一结果越 发令人担忧。

Evidence indicates that the prevalence rate of tobacco use among women is on the rise in some
countries. Governments everywhere must take action to protect women from tobacco
advertising, promotion and sponsorship, as stipulated in the WHO Framework Convention on
Tobacco Control.

有证据表明，一些国家妇女烟草使用率在上升。各国政府必须采取行动，根据《世界卫生
组织烟草控制 框架公约》的规定，保护妇女远离烟草广告、促销和赞助活动。

The Convention also calls on Governments to protect women from second-hand tobacco smoke
— especially in countries where women feel powerless to protect themselves and their children.
As WHO data show, of the 430,000 adults who die each year from second-hand smoke, nearly
two thirds are women.
这项公约还呼吁各国政府保护妇女远离二手烟雾，在妇女感觉无力保护自己和子 女的国家
尤应如此。世界卫生组织的数据显示，在每年因二手烟雾死亡的60万人当中，近三分之二为妇女。

Around the world, more than 1.5 million women die each year from tobacco use. Most of these
deaths occur in low- and middle- income countries. Without concerted action, that number
could rise to 2.5 million women by the year 2030.

We must turn back the global tobacco epidemic. On World No Tobacco Day, I urge all
Governments to address this public health threat. Tobacco use is not stylish or empowering.
It is ugly and deadly.
