[1] If you want to take an adventure travel lasting a day or two, or over a long holiday weekend,
a backpacking adventure travel may be a perfect solution. This type of adventure travel is usually
easier to plan and will give you a nice break away from your everyday routine. Before you begin,
you first have to decide how long you plan on being away.
[2] If you plan on being gone for one single day, a daypack would do, but if you plan on going
on a multi-day adventure travel, you would need to go for backpacking. With both these types,
you would have to keep in mind a few more things. For example, the backpack for your backpacking
adventure travel should come with
sturdy
(结实的) shoulder
straps
(带). In addition to that, your
backpack should also have enough padding and curves. This helps to keep your
collarbone
(锁骨)
safe otherwise it would hurt it.
[3] Another thing that must be understood with backpacking is having good zips. The zips should
be strong and durable. And to make things easier for you, always try to choose zips of the larger
size. These types are always more reliable. Your backpack should also come with a good waist strap.
And why is that essential for you? For the simple reason that it takes much of the weight off
your shoulders and as such your shoulders would not get tired easily.
[4] And the last thing that should be kept in mind before choosing your backpacking adventure
travel is that the material of the backpack must be of the highest quality. You should not compromise
on quality just because of the cost. The consequences could be very problematic. Just imagine
if the backpack gave out in the middle of your adventure travel.
[5] Keep in mind that your preparation will greatly depend on the location you choose for your
adventure travel, the type of
terrain
(地形) and the weather conditions for that area. Be sure
to perform as much research as possible before you leave for your backpacking adventure travel
to ensure you will have an exciting and memorable experience.

[1] Do you see yourself as a winner? If by chance you answer “No” to this question, it reveals
a lot about your self-esteem. Responding with “No” prevents you from winning. Thinking in this
manner is limited. Limited thinking makes it difficult for us to succeed in achieving our goals.
Winning is a great demonstration of the power that we have available within us. When we see ourselves
as being a winner, we are able to achieve anything. Notice that when we are determined to win,
nothing is going to stop us!
[2] Think back to something you won and you’ll notice you didn’t quit. Winning is actually
choosing to face all situations and circumstances with love. When we can see this, and know this

1

other than in theory, we are capable of winning in every situation. When we act in a loving manner,
we are holding in mind winning and being successful. It is always a good idea to practice being
in the habit of reminding yourself on a regular basis that you are a winner. Wake up each day
and say, “I’m a winner!” Pass by a mirror and say, “Yes, I am a winner! I’m successful!”
Speaking positively to yourself and to others allows you to practice winning. When we actively
practice being positive, we are disciplining ourselves to be more successful.
[3] Think of a winner in any field and you’ll notice that they practice their crafts often;
regardless of whether they are on a little league team or are a professional
athlete. . All winners share common traits. Winners
exude confidence
(信心十足).
Winners strive to be the best. Winners believe, “I can do this! I am going to win! I am going
to succeed! I have what it takes!” Winners are constantly moving towards victory. Winners venture
to win and also to be positively rewarded for their efforts. Being a winner requires LOVING one’s
self and loving one’s goals.

[1] Learning about other cultures will enrich our children’s lives. They get to try new foods;
learn different languages; discover new ways of dressing, singing and dancing; and learn new ideas.
[2] Australian children are very lucky. We grow up with other cultures around us, in our classrooms,
on our TV, through sport, books or the movies.
[3] I admit I was shocked when I moved to the USA to live and teach. Many of the children (and,
dare I say it, adults) did not even know where Australia was. The questions they asked seemed
ridiculous, but to them it was their first encounter with a “foreign alien”, so how were they
to know any difference?
[4] The program I taught in the States was created based on the need for American students to
develop global awareness. My role was, , but to expose my students to Australian
culture.
[5] Every year we held an Australian exhibition; the rest of the school would visit and we’d
teach Australian games and slang words. They tried Australian food — seeing their reactions to
eating
Vegemite
(蔬菜酱) was worth all the hard work!
[6] Because of this experience, my principal set up a global awareness program once I left. Each
year the school chooses a country to study. They learn all about the culture and finish the year
off with an exhibition the children have created. Now the children are excited and passionate
about learning.
[7] Through my stories of travel, I noticed dreams began to form in my students. One girl was
determined to go to college and then travel the world after graduating, another had the thirst
for spending time with the Masai warriors in Africa, and many were
adamant
(坚定的) they would
visit me in the “Land Down Under”. I still speak to many of them via the wonderful

2

telecommunications available to us all today.
[8] Global education in the classroom is good, but nothing can teach more than having personal
interactions with other cultures.

[1] Bird-watching is a fun, safe and relatively inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors with yourself,
friends or family. A good pair of binoculars is a must and preferably a good book on birding to
go along with it. You can get a good pair of binoculars for as little as $$70 or spend as much
as $$1000 for a pair. If you’re just starting out, go with a good and reasonably inexpensive pair
to get started. I prefer a lighter-weight pair of binoculars for a little more money. With the
constant movement of your head and neck to observe birds, it’s best to go with a lightweight
pair to ease the strain on your neck.
[2] A good book on birding is in order as well.
Stokes Field Guide to Birds
is ideal because all
the entries are actual photographs of the birds that you are searching for, and not artists’
drawings which are sometimes not quite as accurate. I have several books on birding, including
Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America,
and Roger Tory Petersen’s
Field Guide to Birds

which I would recommend as well.
[3] Last but not least, find a park, nature center, or wildlife
sanctuary
(庇护所) to enjoy your
bird-watching in. There are tens of thousands of places such as these to enjoy your newly-found
hobby in. Some places charge a fee; most places don’t require any kind of charges. It’s entirely
up to you to decide where you want to go. Check your local government buildings, recreational
departments, or websites for further information. You could just as easily take a walk around
your home, your property, or your neighborhood. . A simple, lazy ride in your car
on some country road, near lakes, streams, or rivers will be all you need to find the birds. There
is no place that you will not find a bird or two. So go out and enjoy.

[1] A hiker in California got trapped for days as he walked on a mountain trail. It is believed

3

he was looking for shade and
lost his

footing
(失足跌倒), getting stuck. He was discovered by
a dog and his owner who happened to be passing by on their routine walk. Ramon Llamas and his
dog, Mole, often go on walks, and the 1-year-old dog likes to explore the area when he is on hikes
with his owner.
[2] Recently, the two had been out on their customary walk and the dog suddenly began crying.
Mole pulled Llamas over to the spot. At first Llamas thought his dog had discovered a wild animal
and he asked others in the area to call 911. However, it was no wild animal appearing out of the
rocks. Llamas discovered there was a man trapped.
[3] According to
Yahoo! News
, the hiker, identified only as 44-year- old “Paul” in media reports,
was severely
dehydrated
(脱水的). He had been trapped in the rocks on Mount Rubidoux for somewhere
between four and six days. According to reports, the man was not sure exactly how long he had
been trapped.
[4] Reportedly, the man was trapped in a hidden location in the rocks about 100 feet from the
main trail. Due to the rocks, no one could see or hear him. Paul asked Llamas for water and said,
“Please don’t leave me.” According to media reports he was very dehydrated and hardly conscious.
Emergency services were called and the Riverside Fire Department came to the mountain and helped
rescue the man. Paul is reportedly recovering in a local hospital. He has said he wants to

[1] Callum Lake has a form of
autism
(自闭症), which affects the way he communicates with others.
The disease means the 10-year-old boy struggles to read people’s emotions and to understand social
situations. This makes it difficult for him to make friends at school. , recently the
boy’s life has been transformed by his best friend, a pet
lizard
(蜥蜴) called Spike.
[2] Callum’s mother said, “Callum had always had a special interest in dinosaurs. One day he
asked for one. A lizard seemed like the next best thing, so we bought Spike. As soon as Callum
held him, he fell in love with him. He’s become his best friend. Spike is small, but he has had
a positive impact on Callum’s life. It’s heart-warming to see him so much more confident and
independent with family and at home.”
[3] Every day, Callum is responsible for looking after Spike. In this way, it has given him more
independence and greater confidence in his own abilities. Spike has also given the boy something
to focus on when he gets anxious, which has helped him keep calm, as well as helped him talk with
his classmates at school. Callum said, “Looking after Spike is really fun. I’ve started getting
up early in the mornings, so I can sit and eat my breakfast with him before school.” Not so long,
his mother has noticed the great changes in her son’s character. She owes them to his new pet.
[4] The scientists found that children with autism are better able to comfort other people and

4

to share their possessions, if they have a pet. It’s thought that this could be because introducing
a pet into a family increases family bonds and
interaction

[1] A hard time at the gym will not help your
insomnia
(失眠), according to new research. Exercise
is often suggested for sleeping difficulties, and it does have a beneficial effect. However,
experts say the impact is not immediate, and can take up some time to take effect.
[2] Dr Kelly Baron said, “If you have insomnia, you won’t exercise yourself into sleep right
away. It’s a long-term job. You have to keep at it and not get discouraged.” Dr Baron decided
to analyze the daily effect of exercise, after hearing her patients with insomnia complain that
the exercise didn’t help them right away. She said, “They’d say, ‘I exercised so hard yesterday
and didn’t sleep at all’. Though ??????, I don’t think it is that simple for people with
insomnia.”
[3] She looked at data from older women with insomnia over a 16-week period. She said, “People
have to realize that even if they don’t want to exercise, that’s the time they need to dig in
their heels and get themselves out there. The key message is persistence. Write a note on your
mirror saying ‘Just Do It!’, and you can see wonders in four months. Most importantly, it will
help in the long run.”
[4] Rather than medicine treatments, exercise may be a healthier way to improve sleep because
it could address the potential problems. This study shows exercise and sleep affect each other
in both directions: regular long-term exercise is good for sleep, but poor sleep can also lead
to less exercise. So in the end, sleep still works better as far as health is concerned.

[1] When a group of mums refused to let me and my baby daughter join the circle at a nursery singing
class on my first trip out as a stay- at-home dad, I sobbed for the first time in my adult life.
That wasn’t the only time I burst into tears during the five months I looked after Lily. Out
of loneliness. Out of exhaustion. Out of frustration. I am one sad stay-at-home dad.

[2] “But isn’t this what you wanted?” says my wife Mel. After all, I’d forced her back into
her job when her
maternity

leave
(产假) ran out. Mel earned more than me, and it made financial
sense for her to . “I’ll do it,” I declared, confident for a new challenge.
[3] I have to admit that I’ve failed on all counts. I’m worried I’ve done lasting damage to
our daughter. During the time I’m in charge, she hasn’t learned a single new word. Not only
have I damaged my daughter’s speech development, I’ve made her overweight. Lily has become much
heavier than children of her age. Then there’s the impact I’ve had on her personality. As opposed
to the “girly” games, Lily and I wrestle, build Lego and chase each other. As a result, Lily
has grown into a risk-taker. Having seen other babies don’t play with her, I’m afraid she’ll
become friendless.
[4] Experts suggest 14 months old is an extremely important stage, when learning builds up and
behaviors are set for life. If we put Lily in a nursery now, she could catch up without any lasting
damage. If I carry on looking after her, she’ll become worse in her life. Mel agrees I should
hand Lily over to the nursery professionals while I look for a new job.

[1] Melissa Tennant has decided to complete the wishes her twin sister never could. Melissa was
in Marbella when she got the call, saying her twin sister Nicole had just hours to live. She rushed
back to Gartnavel Hospital in time to say a final goodbye to Nicole.
[2] Now Melissa is determined to complete her sister’s wishes, which include getting tattoos,
jumping out of a plane and posing naked for a life art class. Melissa said, “Nicole was diagnosed
with
cystic fibrosis
(肿性纤维化) as a baby. But all the way through childhood, we were very similar.
It’s in high school that our lives became very different. She was in and out of hospital and
taking up to 30 pills a day. ”
[3] “Nicole wrote down so many things

be jumping out of planes, but I’ll do everything else I can. I’ve had friends and family, who
all get in touch to say they want to help.”
[4] The girls’ father said, “Nicole was a bit not sensible when making that list. It’s as if
she knew she wouldn’t manage to do all of those things herself, and that Melissa would end up
taking them on. Nicole was positive and funny, and tried to make us all feel good. She had a great
sense of humor.”

[1] Most of us hit our 30s and begin to worry about the signs of aging: the wrinkles, the graying
hair, and the fat bottoms. But Grandmother Anne Bolton is already 47, and none of these side effects
have happened. However, she really wishes they would. The mother-of-four says she is always being
mistaken for a woman half her age.
[2] Anne, a market stall worker, says looking like a 20-year-old is actually ruining her life.
Now she’s thinking about having
cosmetic
(整容)surgery to make herself look older. Her youthful
looks have ruined her marriage, as younger men constantly chat her up. She also believes jealous
friends have abandoned her, because she makes them look older. Her eldest son hates being seen
with her, after being mistaken for her boyfriend.
[3] It was heartbreaking for Anne that her life was being so badly affected by the way she looked.
She fears her youthful looks will mean a lifetime of loneliness. “So I have to hang around with
much younger women. They are fun, but deep down we’re not into the same things. ,
I don’t feel I fit in anywhere — with young people, or those of my own age. So I’m scared to
try to make new friends.” It seems that the older she gets, the bigger the problem becomes for
her.
[4] Everyone wants to look younger, but Anne isn’t joking when she says looking young is ruining
her life. She would do anything for a few wrinkles. Why she has none is also a mystery to herself.
“There are many times that people have asked me if I could bottle my secret and sell it — I’d
be a millionaire if I could,” She says.

[1] If two’s a company and three’s a crowd, what do you get when you have three sets of twins?
For baby sisters Rowan and Isla Rodger, who have become the third set of twins in their family,
it’s double the brotherly love. The girls were born two minutes apart, who would have Lewis and
Kyle, and Finn and Jude, to spoil them.
[2] Having three sets of twins to a family is 500,000-1. “It never crossed my mind that it would
be twins again, but I’m absolutely delighted,” Mrs. Rodger said. The dance lecturer was given

the happy news during her six-week scan, and immediately told her husband in a text message. “He
thought ?????? and immediately wrote back to say, ‘This is not funny’,” she said.
[3] The couple decided not to find out the sex of the babies before they arrived. Mrs. Rodger
said, “I was convinced I was having two boys. But I’m still getting my head around the fact
that there will be more girls in the house. I’m absolutely over the moon that it’s girls. It’s
definitely going to be a good journey ahead.” However, Mr. Rodger has a few worries over bringing
up girls. “Boyfriends will be completely unacceptable,” he joked. “I think it will be a
frightening
gauntlet
(考验) for any boyfriend to run.”
[4] Mrs. Rodger will be counting on the boys too, when her husband is away from home on work all
of the next month. She said, “It is a hard task but because the boys are a bit older, it makes
it a bit easier. They understand more and I’m going to need a lot of help from them.”

[1] Can money buy you happiness? Everyone says not, but I would say money can make you happier,
if you use it in the right way. In fact, I’ve come up with distinct ways of making spending feel
good.
[2] The first is Buy Experiences. If you buy a thing — an ice cream, a car, even a house — it’s
great for a moment, but the thrill wears off. But — holidays, concerts, meals out
with friends — we enjoy them more, and we remember them afterwards with greater fondness. Even
unpleasant experiences can become rosier in our memories.
[3] Method number two is probably the most useful of these, Buy Time. Everyone is rushed and stressed.
So if you can afford, buy yourself time not to be. Research suggests that the more people are
paid, the harder they work, and the more miserable they become. By contrast, people who take time
out to do voluntary work feel they have more free time than they did before, even though they
have less because they have just spent it doing voluntary work.
[4] Next up is Pay Now, Consume Later. We pay for everything by credit card, and we think delaying
payment will make us happier, but it doesn’t: we just end up with large amounts of debt and only
the memory of what we spent it all on. While if we pay now and consume later, we get the fun of
looking forward to what we’ve bought, whether it’s a book we haven’t yet read or a holiday
we haven’t yet been on.
[5] Finally, Invest In Others. Give to charity, and best of all, give in such a way that you can
see the results. It’s more fun if you are buying particular books for a particular school rather
than handing over money for who-knows-what. Spending on others does make you happier, in the long
run, than spending on yourself.

[1] I feel quite sorry for my sister when I wander on my farm, which I have developed into the
UK’s largest grower of spelt, a crop similar to wheat. When we bought it in 2003, we hadn’t
a clue what to do with it. It was Rosemary’s suggestion that we should grow spelt here.
[2] Sadly, the reason Rosemary knew about this ancient plant is that she had been diagnosed with
bowel

cancer
(肠癌). She was researching nutrient-rich and easily
digestible
(易消化的) diets
to improve her life. Rosemary had discovered that spelt is one of the easiest grains to digest,
apart from being a great source of fiber, iron, and zinc. Now, in memory of my sister, I’ve joined
forces with Bowel Cancer UK to promote its health benefits. As a result, I created a new website,
.
[3] Sadly, Rosemary died in June just before we harvested our first crop. As we mourned the loss
of my sister, we spent the six months after that harvest experimenting with spelt flour and baking
bread with it. Certainly, I found it a comfort to nurture a crop that had been my sister’s idea
and learn how to use it to create flour and other products for people. I am thrilled by the number
of people who approach us for spelt. They say that switching to spelt has transformed their
wellbeing for the better.
[4] Throughout my career, I want to help the charity raise awareness of to reduce our
risk of cancer through simple changes to diet and lifestyle. If not for Rosemary’s illness and
foresight, we’d never have thought to grow spelt or launched a campaign to raise awareness of
how diet can affect health. We can only hope that through this latest campaign, her spirit lives
on.

[1] The Child Genius competition, a four-part series, will start on Channel 4. In the competition,
children under 11 compete to be crowned Britain’s cleverest child. Of course, some of the children
on the program are better adjusted than others.
[2] In her bright smile, Rosa Maria looks like any other popular ten-year-old. Yet Rosa can add,
subtract
(减去) and multiply numbers quicker than a calculator. Her talent for numbers was first

9

spotted by her mother Paulette at the age of three. Since then, Rosa’s
trajectory
(轨迹) has
been steady. In her recent SAT tests, she got a level six, putting her in the top one percent
of primary school children. In her 11-plus exams, she scored 100 percent in her paper and was
offered places at three grammar schools, and she plays grade five piano.
[3] Rosa’s maths teacher advised Paulette to enter her daughter into the competition and Rosa
agreed it was a good idea, because she gets bored at school for she is far ahead of her classmates.
[4] While Rosa has plenty of friends, she finds it difficult to live up to the high standards
she and others expect of her. “I feel I have done something wrong, if I don’t get a very high
mark,” she says. “People take it for granted I will do well. Sometimes it’s hard to live up
to those expectations. I don’t want to be average, just above average.”
[5] At one point during the series, Rosa was seen weeping. She explained that her brain froze
when she was asked to recall the exact order of a deck of 52 cards. Her mother revealed that Rosa
didn’t want to go through to the next round of the competition after that, but she was persuaded
to go back. It could have been worse. Rosa comforted herself — at least she was picked to ??

[1] Struggling to get the kids to eat their five-a-day? Scientists may well have invented a new
solution, which will provide a small boost to their intake — chocolate made with fruit juice.
It is better for their health, as the juice of apple, orange and cranberry is used to replace
half of the bar’s fat content.
[2] Dr Stefan Bon said, “We have created the chemistry, which is a starting point for healthier
chocolate.” This technique maintains the things that make chocolate “chocolatey”, but with
fruit juice instead of fat. He added, “Everyone loves chocolate, but unfortunately we all know
that many chocolate bars are high in fat. However, that gives chocolate the sense that
people want. A two-ounce (56.7 g) serving of dark chocolate may contain up to 13g of fat, around
20 percent of an individual’s daily fat intake. ”
[3] Using fruit juice could reduce the sugar content of the items. The technique changes the cocoa
butter and milk fats in the usual bars with liquid in the form of micro-bubbles. This helps the
chocolate have a soft “mouth-feel” — firm and pleasant to the bite and yet melt in the mouth.
It works with all types of chocolate, dark, milk, and white, but does give it a fruity taste.
[4] Since the juice is spread out in the chocolate, it doesn’t overpower the taste of the chocolate.
We believe that the technology adds an interesting twist to the range of chocolate products
available. The opportunity to replace part of the fat with water-based juice allows for greater
flexibility and tailoring of both the overall fat and sugar content.

[1] A rough childhood leads to problems later in life. I admit that I felt so powerless throughout
my life that I developed a
stutter
(结巴). This resulted in a really bad case of social anxiety
and I couldn’t talk to save my life.
[2] I started going to the gym at age 14 and after 7 years of perseverance I finally felt like
I had control over my body. Control over my body meant control over my life. This realization
was crucial to also overcoming my stutter. I really hope that any of these lessons can help those
who have any sort of anxiety.
[3] Lesson 1 — Have Faith. The reason why I stuttered was because I kept envisioning in my head
all the possible scenarios that could go wrong. I kept picturing every single word that I was
going to stutter out. This is the worst thing that you can do. I was digging my own grave. If
I believe that I’m going to stutter, then I will stutter. You have to believe that you are going
to speak fluently. You have to believe in your heart that you can talk.
[4] Lesson 2 — Go For It. Now comes the hard part. You must believe that everything will turn
out for the best and simply go for it. Don’t get me wrong. I still have to remind myself to simply
go for it. I simply start talking and I worry about correcting course along the way. Do I ever
stutter? Yes, I sometimes do but EVERYONE stumbles upon words every now and then. Keep going.
[5] Lesson 3 — Forget The End Result. This one is huge and this one is related to being
present. . Who cares what happens. We are all going to die one day so why worry about
every little bad thing that can happen.
[6] Don’t try to plan a perfect scenario. Rarely do things happen the way they were intended
to happen. Have a vision of where you want to go but be open to the constant changes that will
occur along the way.
